Parkland survivor calls out NRA after Secret Service bans guns at convention

One of the student survivors of the Parkland, Fla., school shooting called out the National Rifle Association (NRA) on Sunday after it was announced firearms would be banned from its upcoming convention.

Due to Vice President Pence appearing at the event, the Secret Service said that firearms and other weapons would not be allowed at the event.

The student, Cameron Kasky, posted a photo on Twitter of an NRA notice stating that firearms won’t be allowed at the convention because of Pence’s attendance.

Kasky is one of the students who began to organize in favor of gun reform after the February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 people dead.

The NRA did not respond to The Hill’s request for comment.

In their advocacy work, the students explicitly targeted the NRA and politicians aligned with the group.

Last month, the students organized the “March for Our Lives” rally for gun reform in Washington, D.C.

The NRA’s conference in Dallas will take place May 3-6. It is expected to attract more than 80,000 people and is being billed as “the biggest Annual Meeting yet.”

An earlier report from the Associated Press that the NRA had itself banned the weapons had drawn quick accusations of hypocrisy against the group. The AP later corrected its original report.

Updated at 4:07 p.m. April 30 to clarify that the Secret Service banned the weapons from the event.
