A spokesman for Sanders told The Hill that de Blasio had asked Sanders to preside over the ceremony.
The New York Times first reported the news.
Sanders held an endorsement rally in October for de Blasio, who won reelection handily over Republican opponent Nicole Malliotakis the following month.
Former President Clinton presided over de Blasio’s January 2014 inauguration ceremony in front of City Hall.
De Blasio previously served in the Clinton administration as a regional director for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and managed Hillary Clinton’s successful Senate bid in New York.
His most recent win makes him the first Democratic mayor in roughly three decades to be voted in for a second term in office in New York.
