Kirk, speaking Spanish, hits Trump in new ad: ‘Yo no apoyo a Trump’
Sen. Mark Kirk, one of the few Republicans up for reelection who has openly denounced Donald Trump, stressed his opposition to the GOP presidential nominee in a new Spanish language ad Tuesday.
{mosads}In the 30-second ad, aimed at Hispanics, Kirk says “Yo no apoyo a Trump,” which means “I do not support Trump” in Spanish.
Kirk is defending his seat in a competitive race against Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) as the Republicans seek to keep control of the Senate.
Cook Political Report has rated the race as leaning Democrat, giving the advantage to Duckworth.
Kirk withdrew his support for Trump after he attack a federal judge born in Indiana, saying his “Mexican heritage” prevented him from fairly overseeing a case involving Trump University.
“I have spoken out against him,” Kirk said in the ad.
According to the Chicago Sun Times, Kirk learned Spanish in 1979, when he was a student in a language immersion class at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
