Deborah Ross, the Democratic challenger to Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), outraised the vulnerable GOP incumbent in the first fundraising quarter of 2016.

Ross raised $1.3 million in the latest fundraising haul, narrowly edging out Burr’s $1.1 million, according to The News & Observer.

{mosads}“Deborah’s fundraising numbers reflect the strong groundswell of support from voters across North Carolina,” Ross spokesman Austin Vevruka said.

“People are tired of politics as usual and of people in Washington not working to address their needs or stand up for their values — and this grassroots momentum shows it.”

But Burr still holds a significant cash advantage over the former state representative. His campaign spokesman said he has $5.8 million in the bank after the first quarter.

Ross has yet to release her cash on hand, but she ended last year with about $452,000, according to fundraising reports.

“With over $7 million in donations this cycle, Sen. Burr is grateful for the support he has received for his reelection campaign,” Burr spokesman Alex Johnson said.

“Voters clearly want a senator that knows how to keep our families safe, and as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Sen. Burr has been working tirelessly to keep all of us safe.”

Burr has a difficult path in the fall in a state that President Obama won by a razor-thin margin in the 2008 election and narrowly lost in 2012.

Burr still leads in recent polls, but he has a negative job-approval rating.
