McMahon and Murphy in statistical dead heat in Conn. Senate race

Murphy has 46 percent support to McMahon’s 44 percent support in the Siena poll, with 8 percent of likely voters still undecided. McMahon has stronger crossover appeal, taking 21 percent of Democrats to Murphy’s 12 percent of Republicans.

{mosads}But one of the fiercest battles in the nation seems to be taking a toll on both candidates. Their favorability ratings are underwater — 49 percent of voters view McMahon negatively, to 41 percent who view her positively, while 45 percent of voters view Murphy negatively to 36 percent who view him positively.

McMahon has spent millions of dollars of her own money on an airwave offense, launching attacks that slam Murphy for missing real estate payments and congressional committee hearings, while Murphy has been supported by the national Democratic Party with attacks on McMahon’s record on women. The Connecticut Democratic Party has also worked to make her time as CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment an issue, releasing highlight reels of some of the WWE’s more salacious skits.

The result of the Siena poll echoes most recent polls, which have alternately shown Murphy or McMahon up slightly. Neither has yet managed to maintain a persistent positive trend in the polls, indicating this race is as close as ever.

Siena surveyed 552 likely voters from Oct. 4-14, and the poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.
