Kamala Harris to run for Senate
California Attorney General Kamala Harris, a Democratic rising star, plans to announce Tuesday she will run for retiring Sen. Barbara Boxer’s (D-Calif.) open seat, an adviser to Harris tells The Hill.
She’ll be the first major candidate to throw her hat in the ring in what could be a crowded and expensive Democratic field.
Other top-tier potential candidates include wealthy environmentalist Tom Steyer (D) and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D).
The news was expected by some after California Lieutenant Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced Monday that he wouldn’t run for the seat. The two rising stars share consultants and a Northern California political and donor base, and were expected not to run against one another.
