National Dems hammer Cassidy on veterans’ issues in Louisiana

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is launching a new ad charging Rep. Bill Cassidy, Republicans’ pick to take on Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), “put millionaires before veterans.”

{mosads}The ad is part of a $2.4 million buy that the committee plans to use to highlight how the candidate’s “priorities are out of step with Louisiana.”

“Those who serve have their priorities straight. But Congressman Bill Cassidy doesn’t,” a narrator declares in the ad.

It charges he voted “against making it easier for veterans to afford a home” and opposed expanding access for veterans to the Louisiana State University Veterans Affairs hospital, while he voted for “tax breaks for the wealthy.” The ad points to his votes for the GOP budget and, as state senator, in opposition to the business plan for the VA hospital, as evidence.

The ad is the latest in an ongoing salvo in one of the nation’s most competitive races this cycle, and one that’s crucial to GOP hopes of taking back the Senate. Polling has shown Landrieu is vulnerable, and Republicans have poured millions into the race to label Landrieu a Washington insider beholden to President Obama.

That was the theme of a new ad launched Wednesday by Americans for Prosperity, the GOP group backed by the billionaires Charles and David Koch. It hammers Landrieu for owning a multi million-dollar home in Washington and for voting often with the president.

“It’s easy to forget your roots in a place like that. Especially after 20 years,” a narrator says in that ad.
