Biden fundraising for Ga. Senate candidate

Vice President Biden headlined a fundraiser for Georgia Senate candidate Michelle Nunn (D) on Tuesday afternoon.

{mosads}The private event in Atlanta is the latest sign that Democrats are bullish about Nunn’s chances in the Republican-leaning state, especially with a GOP primary that could produce a flawed nominee.

Biden’s support helped Nunn fill her already-robust campaign coffers — she’s been one of the strongest fundraisers in either party this cycle, raising $3.3 million so far.

But she’s sought to position herself as a centrist Democrat not beholden to the Obama administration, and Georgia Republicans are already using the event to tie her to the unpopular president.

“After months of lying low and ducking the issues, Democrat Michelle Nunn has finally shown where her true allegiance lies: with the Obama Administration and its liberal agenda of government run health care, higher taxes, and record debt,” Republican National Committee spokesman Michael Short said in an email. “If the Obama Administration’s agenda is good enough for Michelle Nunn to support it in private, then why isn’t it good enough for her to support it in public?”

Biden served in Congress with Nunn’s father, former Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.). The event was held at the home of attorney Nancy Field, a major Democratic donor, according to a pool report.

This post was updated to reflect Biden’s visit.
