Poll: Clinton has double-digit lead over Trump in Michigan

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is widening her lead in Michigan over her Republican rival, Donald Trump, according to a poll released Wednesday.

{mosads}Clinton has a nearly 12-point lead over her Trump in the state among likely voters, according to a poll released by The Detroit News and WDIV, 42.2 percent to 30.6 percent.

Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson is supported by 10.3 percent of likely voters and Green Party nominee Jill Stein is backed by 4.6 percent.

In a Michigan poll conducted at the end of the September, Clinton had a nearly 7-point lead over her Republican rival. 

This week’s poll, which shows a drop in support for Trump, was conducted after Sunday night’s presidential debate and after the release of a 2005 recording in which Trump is heard making lewd comments about women.

The GOP nominee described how he could grope and kiss women without their consent because of his celebrity. Trump brushed off the comments as “locker room talk” but has nonetheless faced backlash from many Republicans — some of whom have rescinded their support of their party’s nominee.

Clinton leads Trump in Michigan among women by a significant margin, 48 percent to 24.6 percent.

Some 42.8 percent of likely voters in the state also think the GOP nominee should drop out of the race, a number that includes about 24 percent of self-identifying Republicans.

Another 49.2 percent of likely voters think the GOP nominee should remain in the running.

Clinton was also largely seen as the winner of Sunday’s debate, 48.7 percent to 25.4 percent.

The poll was conducted from Oct. 10 to 11 among 600 likely voters in Michigan. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.

According to the RealClearPolitics average of polls in the state, Clinton has a 7-point lead over her Republican rival in a four-way matchup, 44.3 percent to 37.3 percent.
