Clinton: Trump brought GOP to ‘midnight in America’

PHILADELPHIA — Hillary Clinton used her speech accepting the Democratic presidential nomination Thursday night to portray Donald Trump as a dark and menacing force in American politics.

“He’s taken the Republican Party a long way from ‘morning in America’ to midnight in America,” Clinton said at the Democratic National Convention here, playing off former President Ronald Reagan’s 1984 slogan.

Clinton said America had arrived at a “moment of reckoning” with this election, and that “powerful forces are threatening to pull us apart.” 

“Bonds of trust and respect are fraying,” she said. “We have to decide whether we will all work together so we can all rise together.”

Clinton referenced another former president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, saying that he gave Trump the perfect rebuke more than 80 years ago “during a much more perilous time.”

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” she said, quoting the 32nd president.

The crowd of Democratic supporters and delegates recited the words with her.
