Warren, Kaine, Castro on Clinton’s VP shortlist: reports
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Housing Secretary Julian Castro are on Hillary Clinton’s shortlist for her presidential running mate, according to two new reports.
Several Clinton confidants have been culling a list of potential contenders and have started contacting those under consideration for personal information, The Associated Press reported Tuesday.
{mosads}The AP reported that Warren, Kaine and Castro are on Clinton’s shortlist and that aides are moving to contact the pool of candidates to set up interviews.
CNN also reported on Tuesday that Clinton was narrowing her choices for running mate and reported that Warren, Kaine and Castro were on a list of potential picks being studied by Clinton.
Several Democrats, however, told CNN that Clinton’s list may also include Labor Secretary Tom Perez, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.).
Clinton, who earlier this month become the presumptive Democratic nominee, hasn’t yet conducted formal interviews in the vetting process, which is closing in on its final weeks, according to the network.
Both the AP and CNN reported that Clinton’s primary challenger Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is not on Clinton’s shortlist. Aides told CNN he was not expected to be considered and Clinton aides said he is not.
Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta is leading the VP effort, CNN reported citing Democratic sources, while Clinton adviser Cheryl Mills is helping the former secretary of State with the decision.
Clinton’s mulling of a potential VP comes as Trump deals with a staff shakeup after firing his campaign manager on Monday and works to close a fundraising gap with Clinton.
Trump is expected to announce his own VP pick at his party’s convention in late July, his son Donald Trump Jr. said Tuesday morning on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
