Donald Trump on Tuesday appealed to Republican Party leaders to support his White House candidacy as the presumptive GOP nominee continues to lag his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, in fundraising.
“I need support from the Republicans. I mean, in some ways I get more support from the Democrats than I do the Republicans,” Trump said on “Fox and Friends.”
{mosads}Trump said that “some have been phenomenal,” calling the Republican National Committee “terrific,” but he indicated he wants more vocal support from party leaders.
“It would be nice to have full support from people that are in office, full verbal support,” Trump said. “With all of that being said, I may go a different route if things don’t happen.”
Trump’s campaign finished May with just $1.3 million in the bank, according to a Federal Election Commission filing late Monday, a strikingly low amount for a major party’s standard-bearer.
Trump raised just $3.1 million for his campaign in May, the month he was declared the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee. During the same month, Clinton raised $26.4 million.
Clinton, who has built an extensive fundraising infrastructure while Trump pushed off major donations in the GOP primary, finished May with $42.5 million on hand.
“She’s going to spend more than $1 billion. I don’t want to do that,” Trump said Tuesday morning.
“We want to keep it lean. I’m not looking to spend all this money,” he added.
“Politicians are the only ones who can spend a billion dollars. Hillary Clinton will spend a billion dollars of Wall Street money and money from the Middle East.”
Trump said he “raised a lot of money” at several fundraisers recently in Texas and Arizona. Pressed to disclose the amount, Trump said he helped raise “about $12 million” for the Republican Party.
