Clinton: Warren ‘qualified for any role’ including VP
Hillary Clinton says Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) would be qualified to serve as her vice president.
“I have the highest regard for Sen. Warren,” Clinton told Politico for a story published Thursday afternoon, shortly after news leaked that Warren would endorse Clinton.
“I think she is an incredible public servant, eminently qualified for any role. I look forward to working with her on behalf of not only the campaign and her very effective critique of Trump, but also on the issues that she and I both care about,” Clinton added.
Warren, who is expected to formally endorse Clinton on “The Rachel Maddow” show Thursday night, reportedly had concerns about having two women on a White House ticket in November.
Warren has considered the idea of serving as Clinton’s running mate, Reuters reported citing sources familiar with her thinking, but she had concerns about whether an all-female presidential ticket was party’s best shot in the fall.
The liberal firebrand has been a vocal critic of presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, including attacking him on Twitter, and her presence on a ticket could help bring in supporters of Democratic hopeful Bernie Sanders, who sought to push Clinton to the left during the primary.
Clinton praised Sanders for having “contributed greatly to the campaign” but reportedly demurred in the Politico interview when asked about putting him on the ticket.
“His passions for the issues that he promoted has been good for the Democratic Party and for the country. I look forward to talking with him when our campaigns can find a time that works with both our schedules,” she said.
Democrats are closing ranks around Clinton as their presumptive nominee, with President Obama endorsing her in a video released Thursday, saying, “I don’t think there’s ever been someone so qualified to hold this office.”
