Sanders is top contender in Time’s Person of the Year poll

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) currently leads online polling for Time magazine’s 2015 Person of the Year, with less than two weeks to go before voting ends.

{mosads}The Democratic presidential candidate, a self-described democratic socialist, leads among the magazine’s readers with 11.2 percent of the overall vote in the survey.

The magazine’s editors pick the Person of the Year, though anyone can weigh in online.

Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist Malala Yousafzai is the current runner-up at 4.8 percent, followed by global luminaries Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pope Francis and President Obama.

Donald Trump, the celebrity businessman-turned Republican presidential candidate who has led polls of the GOP field since June, falls just outside the top 10 in the poll with 2.3 percent of the vote.

Trump, who like Sanders has enjoyed an active online following, has challenged the magazine to make him its Person of the Year, but suggested Time’s staff couldn’t bring themselves to do it.

Democratic rival Hillary Clinton currently takes 1.3 percent, while GOP contenders Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson are at 1.1 percent and 1 percent, respectively.
