Carson: Scholarship offer was ‘informal’
Ben Carson says he was offered an “informal” scholarship to West Point in an interview with The New York Times on Friday.
“It was, you know, an informal ‘with a record like yours we could easily get you a scholarship to West Point,’ ” Carson said.
{mosads}The GOP presidential candidate said he did not remember all of the details surrounding the offer.
“I don’t remember all the specific details,” he said. “Because I had done so extraordinarily well you know I was told that someone like me — they could get a scholarship to West Point.”
“But I made it clear I was going to pursue a career in medicine,” he added.
The Times said Carson posted a response to a Facebook question in August saying he was “thrilled to get an offer from West Point.” Because he was interested in medicine, however, he said, he applied only to Yale.
