Graham: Romney will win Michigan, Arizona

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) predicted Sunday that Mitt Romney will win both the Michigan and Arizona primaries on Tuesday.

Graham, who has not endorsed a Republican presidential candidate, went a step further than Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) during a joint appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday. McCain, a Romney supporter, said he was “confident Mitt will do well” in Tuesday’s primaries.

{mosads}Graham said that tough primary contest was good for Romney, as the challenges from Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum have made him a stronger candidate.

Romney was defeated in South Carolina, Graham said, “but by the time Florida came around, Romney really took it to the field.”

“Our frontrunner Mitt Romney really has sharpened his skills” he added.

McCain, however, said that the bruising primary contest had weakened the Republican field, calling the tenor of the debate “mud wrestling.”

McCain said that he did not see any way for a dark horse candidate to either enter the race or emerge in a brokered convention.

The two senators, who just returned from a trip through the Middle East, said that the recent turmoil in Afghanistan over the accidental burning of Qurans, which has left four Americans dead in the aftermath, does not mean the United States should speed up its withdrawal.

McCain said that if Afghanistan reverts to a chaotic situation, al Qaeda would return and again use the country as a base to launch attacks against the United States.

In Egypt, Graham said he was hopeful the ordeal of Americans who have been detained and are undergoing trial for promoting unrest would end soon. The trial of the U.S. non-governmental organization workers was delayed on Sunday, according to the Associated Press.

Graham said the senators met with members of the Muslim Brotherhood on the issue, and many expressed their disdain toward the law being used to prosecute the Americans.

“The Muslim Brotherhood said they don’t like this law,” Graham said. “That should give everybody the political cover they need to let our people come home.”
