Sierra Club endorses Honda

Rep. Mike Honda’s (D-Calif.) reelection campaign on Tuesday received the endorsement of the Sierra Club.

Honda is facing a primary in the heavily Democratic California district against Ro Khanna (D). Honda will likely face the former Obama administration official in the general election as well because of California election rules.

{mosads}“Mike Honda has consistently stuck up for the environment in Congress, making sure that Americans can count on clean air and water wherever they live,” David Scott, the environmental group’s president, said in a statement.

The group touted Honda’s work against “unregulated fracking” and the Keystone XL pipeline.

“Sierra Club is proud to endorse Congressman Honda for re-election in 2014,” Scott said.

In a news release, Honda also touted endorsements from other progressive groups — including MoveOn.org, Planned Parenthood and Howard Dean’s group Democracy for America, which endorsed him last week.

The 14-year incumbent has also racked up endorsements from President Obama and a number of other California lawmakers.

But Khanna has raised millions of dollars in the Silicon Valley district and received support from big names in the tech industry. He is running as the more centrist candidate.

Because of California election law, the two top finishers in the primary — regardless of party — advance to the general election. It is likely that both Honda and Khanna could advance.
