Jimmy Carter’s grandson to run for Ga. governor
Georgia state Sen. Jason Carter (D), former President Jimmy Carter’s grandson, will run for Georgia governor.
Carter, who has been expected to challenge Gov. Nathan Deal (R), announced his decision in an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
{mosads}”We can’t wait as a state,” he tells the paper. “The bottom line is we can’t afford four more years of an economy that’s not working for the middle class and an education system that’s underfunded. It’s not about politics. It’s about making sure we can get the state that we need.”
His decision to run gives Democrats two top-tier candidates for the top of their ticket in the Republican-leaning state. Charity CEO Michelle Nunn (D), the daughter of former Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), is running for the Senate.
Georgia has been moving gradually more toward the GOP since the late 1980s, but Democrats are hopeful the state’s changing demographics, with fast-growing African-American and Hispanic populations and a number of less conservative, younger white voters moving into metro Atlanta in recent years, could give them an opening.
