Marco Rubio on Friday morning argued that Donald Trump wouldn’t be able to unite the Republican Party, a day after pledging he’d support the GOP presidential front-runner over the Democrats’ nominee.
{mosads}”When is the last time you have ever seen a front-runner perform the way he has? He’s won x-number of states, and we’re still being asked, ‘Will you support him if he’s the nominee?’ I mean that question would never come up if anyone else was the front-runner,” Rubio said on “Fox and Friends.”
“Sixty-five percent of Republican voters do not want him to be our nominee. He can never unite our party; it really puts us in a tough position,” Rubio continued. “And that’s why I’m asking everyone to unite around our campaign.”
“I don’t want us to have a nominee that people have to settle for,” Rubio said on NBC’s “Today” show.
Rubio, whose campaign website offers apparel branded with the hashtag #NeverTrump used by those vowing not to support the controversial billionaire businessman, joined his rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich during the GOP debate Thursday night in vowing to support Trump if he becomes the nominee.
The Florida senator argued that the Democratic candidates are both disqualifying, stating, “One of them is a socialist; America doesn’t want to be a socialist country. … The other one is under FBI investigation, and not only is she under FBI investigation, she lied to the families of the victims of Benghazi.”
Rubio argued Friday morning on Fox News that he could unite the party, insisted he’d win his home state of Florida on March 15, tweaked Trump for reversing his position on visas for highly skilled migrant workers and argued that he was more electable than Trump.
“No one performs worse against Hillary Clinton than Donald Trump,” Rubio said.
